Soccer Game goes Bananas when a Player is Called "a Black Monkey!"
Welcome to another episode of the podcast RPB where we peer into the world of humans via the lens of animals—in this case, a monkey, me—your host, George D' Curious.
Today,
we'll be talking about racism in soccer...
"At a soccer game in Europe fans made animalistic gestures by repeatedly beating their chests while "booing" and "grunting" before pelting a Black African soccer star with bananas and then proceeded to laugh at him."
Some of these fans even taunt their own team's players. Despite
several organized "Against Racism" movements, racism in
soccer seems on the rise, provoking the animal community to take
action-apes, especially who are becoming increasingly concerned about
their mannerisms and favorite fruitt—he banana—used in the vile
act of racism. And here with us in the studio is a soccer player who
has chosen to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of this
interview...
George
D'Curious:
First
of all, I have to say its an outrage for apes like me to see our
mannerism being used in the most vulgar and vile behavior of racism.
Supposedly, humans are more evolved, and we are primitive-how come
some soccer fans enjoy beating their chest and grunting at black
players?
Anonymous
soccer player:
Dunno,
some use it as a tool to demoralize players. I mean, I ask myself the
same question sometimes, cause I have also been a victim. For
instance, racist chants lead to a player walking off the field and
the game had to be stopped-in that instance the racial supremacists
won. And in soccer sometimes, the fans do whatever to make their team
win-that doesn't make it right of course. Like your show on PBS,
Curious George, you do whatever to get ratings don't you?
George
D'Curious:
I
don't have a show called 'Curious George' on PBS. That's a passive
aggressive cartoon created by your kind to insult to my kind.
Anonymous
soccer player:
But
its an intelligent show—I mean I love Curious George—"
George
D'Curious:
Yes,
we in the ape community have a show like that called 'Curious Human'
where George is played by a human. Speaking of Passive aggressive
insults somebody said: 'Look into the eyes of an orangutan, and a
sentient being looks back.' What do you think about that?"
Anonymous
soccer player:
I
have been to an Orangutan exhibit...and am not sure if I should say
if I agree here...but I believe I was looking at a sentient
being...like myself...I mean what do you think?
George
D'Curious:
Ask
me when I barricade you behind a glass for years with your business
all out there for the world to see, and then I come up to the glass
cage and say: 'when I look into your eyes a sentient being looks
back.'
Anonymous
soccer player:
You're
joking, right?
George
D'Curious:
Back
to mannerisms and racism in soccer, you were recently a victim of
racism on the pitch. And the press applauded the way you handled the
situation by not letting the supremacist win. How did you handle it?
Anonymous
soccer player:
Yes,
these supremacists win when they succeed in demoralizing you-that's
the goal-on this occasion I didn't let it happen. I was reaching for
a dead ball at the edge of the pitch when a fan of the opposing team
threw a banana at me. I simply picked up the banana, peeled it, ate
it and then pound my chest repeatedly while bellowing before playing
on.
George
D'Curious:
Get
out of my studio!
The
point is clear here; apes do not appreciate their mannerisms and
favorite fruit (the banana) used in the vile act of racism-whether
from supremacists or victims. And we humans should never engage in
the vile act of racism. If the apes don't appreciate it, we, the
supposed more evolved humans shouldn't in any form.
